    Standard shakedown. You do this to a ship of any size, and any loose gear will go flying. Then you clean up and fix whatever broke - and the ship is stronger and better prepared for rough seas, battle damage, etc. Also, this is how we tell if it can perform in battle - this sort of manuevering is done every time a CV is accepted by the Navy. When you throw 80,000 tons into reverse, its pretty impressive as well.

    These are carriers during carrier qualifications prior to deployment. They are doing High speed turns... at 35+ knots... this is part of the quals to see if the ship is sea worthy and can handle the stresses of extreme operations typically this move would only be done in an emergency situation.. usually nothing happens to the ship except for a few sea sick sailors
