USS John C. Stennis (CVN -74 )

The USS John C. Stennis (CVN -74 ) is an American multi-purpose aircraft carrier nuclear propulsion , part of the Nimitz class.

 It is the fourth aircraft carrier subclass Theodore Roosevelt, and was one of 11 giant aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy .

This aircraft carrier is named after a Democratic senator from the state of Mississippi , John Cornelius Stennis (1901-1995) , who was a strong supporter of the Navy.

Stennis that originates from a southern state earned the aircraft carrier the nickname " Johnny Reb " (referring to the Civil War ) .

The ship's motto , Peace through strength ( peace through strength ) from a speech by President Ronald Reagan on the construction of the new vessel .

In his speech, he describes Senator John C. Stennis of " uncompromising supporter of the concept of peace through strength ."

The order was placed March 29, 1988 at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia , under the name CVN- 74.

 The keel is made starts March 13, 1991 , and construction of the vessel at a total cost equivalent to $ 3.5 billion ( over 1988).

It was inaugurated on 11 November 1993 in the presence of Vice President Al Gore and Margaret Stennis - Womble (daughter of Stennis ) and between active duty Dec. 9, 1995 , attached to the Norfolk Naval Base.

Its two anchors from the USS Forrestal (ship removed from the Navy in 1993).



Stennis Strike Group:

Stennis Strike Group is part of Carrier Strike Group 3 ( CSG -3) and carries the squadrons that make up Carrier Air Wing 9 ( CVW -9). It is the flagship of CSG- 3 and the headquarters of the commander of Destroyer Squadron 21.
